METAVISION

Metavision is an audiovisual piece, created via a collaboration between Goldberg and German electronic musician Intersolar. The piece is based on twelve abstract digital drawings from Goldberg’s ‘Metagraphs’ series; the artist separated the compositions into layers and used motion graphics software to create animation segements. These segments were then edited together into a video sequence. Intersolar created an original score for the piece through a transatlantic online collaboration. The final piece was first exhibited in 2011 as a projector-based video installation at 4 North Main Gallery in Southampton, NY. It was also published by the artist as a limited-edition DVD. The piece is viewable online below:

Tonegrid

tonegridTonegrid is code-based artwork based on the idea of a synaesthetic interface, in which mouse movements over a grid of squares are interpreted into a continuous piano composition linked to animated elements in the work. The keys of one ocvtave of a piano were mapped to the blocks, with the highest notes at the top. There is no distinction between the mapping of major and minor notes, and the 16 blocks are repeated horizontally to form a grid.
The delay in each loop interacts with incoming signals, creating a composition which can be left running undisturbed. Once activated, each square is then able to create a new sound and visual effect after one second has passed. A mouseclick will trigger a sound, as well, but the length of time in the current “loop” will determine the delay in feedback. It was first exhibited as an interactive installation at Works in Progress, National University Center, San Diego, CA in 2006.

Tonegrid is available as an online installation at tonegrid.com (Flash Plug-In Required)

DREAMING BRAIN

Dreaming Brain was an early interactive piece created as a collaboration by artists Colin Goldberg and Steve Miller. The work incorporates QuicktimeVR panoramas within an HTML-based environment. Dreaming Brain, produced in 1999, was presented in the context of a traveling museum show entitled ‘DREAMWORKS: Twentieth Century Artistic and Psychological Perspectives’ in celebration of the 100th year publication date of Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams. The exhibition opened at the Equitable Art Gallery in New York, and was the sole interactive piece in the show, which included original works by Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Jackson Pollock, Rene Magritte, Paul Klee, Francesco Clemente, John Baldesari, Arnulf Rainer, Jim Dine, Eric Fischl and Jasper Johns.

Dreaming Brain has been archived on the web at dreamingbrain.com (QuickTime Plug-in Required).
